With a personal tour guide, wander through the streets of the centre of Le Havre, which received the ultimate honour of UNESCO World Heritage status on the 15th July 2005. Heavily bombed during the war, Le Havre was obliterated in September 1944, making it one of the most badly damaged cities in Europe. The French State entrusted the reconstruction of Le Havre to one of the greatest architects of the period: Auguste Perret. Over 133 hectares, he carried out the urbanist’s dream and created his own unique style. He was in charge of the re-building of the town centre until his death in 1954, leaving a masterpiece behind him.
Explore the Church of Saint Joseph, one of Perret’s most beautiful buildings in Le Havre, Foch Avenue, the Porte Océane, and the 17th floor of the tower of the Town Hall, where you can enjoy breath-taking views over the city and estuary. You will arrive in front of two buildings, which, unlike Perret’s works, are curved in shape. These are “Le Volcan”, (a performing arts theatre), and a Library, which bears the name of the architect and sculptor Oscar Niemeyer, who is most well-known for designing the plans for the city of Brasilia.
You guide will talk about the modernity of this architecture, which can also be seen in buildings by other leading architectural lights: Jean Nouvel, who built the Bains des Docks in 2008 (an extraordinary aquatic centre) and the reconquest of the Eure harbour district by Reichen and Robert, who gave the former 19th-century docks a new lease of life. Other examples include the new Ecole Nationale Supérieure Maritime in the shape of a ship’s bow or even the A Docks estate (made of containers), which provides student accommodation. You can also visit Perret’s show-room: this museum-apartment will transport you to the 1950s (the dishes and furniture are from that period), and is an accurate portrayal of the space presented by Perret to the Universal Exhibition in 1947.
